How to: Weaving with Roving Wool

I knew I loved roving before I even knew what it was. The big, soft, and fluffy texture definitely catches your eye! Do you feel the same?!

Watch this video for a demonstration of how I weave with roving, then scroll to the bottom for some extra tips!

Tips for using roving wool:

  • Never cut the length of roving with scissors. This leaves a very blunt end that’s hard to hide in weavings! Instead, tear the wool by hold your hands six inches apart and pull away from each other (as seen in the video).

  • You’ll want to handle the wool as little as possible, as it gets fuzzy very easily!

  • I hardly ever use the natural thickness of roving as it comes from the store. I like to split mine in half lengthwise for a more manageable amount.

  • Adding a little twist as you weave will help it hold its shape better so you can continue manipulating the shapes to your liking.

If you’d like to buy some roving for your own projects, you’ll find a lot of amazing colors available through Niroma Studio, Funem Studio, and even Etsy!
